Digitizing the Permanent Collection

Shelly Mallon

Gallery Lambton's key museological activities and services include the responsibility to collect, manage, research, showcase, and interpret a collection of contemporary and historically significant Canadian visual art and visual culture as per its mandate. With a generous grant from the Canadian Heritage Museum Assistance Program, Gallery Lambton has contracted the services of Shelly Mallon, Collections Technician (seen left) to conduct a face to face inventory and condition report of the full collection in preparation for the 'Collection in Transition' project. This project will ensure that the Gallery meets the stringent collection management requirements of its Category A designation.

Phase 1

Jessica Butler

The first phase of the project began with the purchase and installation of a new collections database and included updating current digital records, data entry, and collection policy development.

The completion of this stage of the project will:

  • enhance collection documentation and resources
  • strengthen collections management professional standards
  • provide increased public access to the collection

Phase 2

The second phase of the project is to physically prepare the permanent collection for its move to the new Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery. Jessica Butler (right), a Sarnia native and OCAD University student has been hired through the Young Canada Works Program to work with Shelly Mallon to ensure the safety and proper conservation of the collection during transportation.  These preparations and methods are being carried out over the next several months by following the high standards of the Canadian Conservation Institute.

Projects Happening at Gallery Lambton

Sensing Place: an artist in residency project

Throughout 2011, visiting artist Andreas Rutkauskas and cultural writer Lee Rodney will work closely with Director/Curator Lisa Daniels and local artist collective, S.A.R.C.A.S.M., in the design and production of a new artistic project that engages the Sarnia-Lambton community with our landscape. Using GPS technology, Rutkauskas has produced a number of projects that investigate an immediate area or specific geographic location. Over the next year, Rutkauskas will be returning numerous times, conducting field research, meeting members of the community, developing his final project, and going on your walks!

See more of Rutkauskas' work here: http://www.andreasrutkauskas.com/

Participate!

Sign out one of our 15 GPS units and take it on a walk through the areas of your own neighbourhood, city or county that you feel are important to our sense of place.

The GPS data will be used by Andreas Rutkauskas as part of an exhibition that will be featured in the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery!

Please contact Gallery Lambton if you would like to participate, or for more information.

This project has been generously support by the County of Lambton, Canada Council for the Arts, and the Ontario Arts Council. Andreas Rutkauskas wishes to express thanks to the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec for its financial support.

Adad Hannah Project

Gallery Lambton is pleased to present the tentatively titled Adad Hannah Project to our community. Adad Hannah has visited Sarnia-Lambton on four separate occasions already, meeting many members of the community and getting a feel for our great county. Adad is always busy when he's in town, and over his first four visits he has: explored the county; met prominent community members; presented talks on his work and practice; visited high-schools; held model casting calls; work shopped with youth; and so much more!

And what is all of this work for? Adad is here to produce a brand new work of art that will be featured as one of the opening exhibitions at the Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery in 2012! As if that wasn't exciting enough, the project is being made right here in our own community, working directly with over 25 local youth between the ages of 5 and 17.

The artist will return in June to work with local artists and volunteers to construct the props and scenery for the exhibit, and again in September to begin shooting the footage. This is a particularly exciting opportunity for our youth as they engage in the process of creating an artwork with one of the most celebrated contemporary Canadian artists of our time.

Check out a video from Adad's last weekend in Sarnia, below.

This project has been generously support by the County of Lambton and the Ontario Arts Council.

September First Friday - R.A.A.W. Exhibition and Community Bike Tour

R.A.A.W. Exhibition

R.A.A.W. RAWKS!A special, two-day only, exhibition of artwork from the Random Acts of Art Workshop

First Friday, September 2, 2011 from 6:00 - 9:00pm
Saturday, September 3, 2011 from 10:00am - 5:00pm

Gallery Lambton invites you to the opening reception for the Random Acts of Art Workshops exhibition on First Friday, September 2 from 6:00-9:00pm. RAAW has enjoyed another banner year, breaking attendance records for the programs and managing growing waiting lists every week. The dynamic programming has included popular requests from previous years, like stained glass and cartooning, while featuring brand new workshops led by some of the most exciting contemporary Canadian artists working today. The exposure to local and national practicing artists is a truly unique opportunity. It provides a challenging, encouraging, and liberating space for youth (14-18 years old) to creatively develop and express one's individuality and identify one's place in the broader community.

Come show your support for Sarnia-Lambton's creative youth! Examples from each of the workshops will be on display, so there will be something for everybody.

Community Bike Tour #2

Art & Ideas: Community Bike Tour #2 with S.A.R.C.A.S.M.

Sensing Place: An artist in residence project

First Friday, September 2, 2011. Tour departs from Gallery Lambton at 7:30pm

Let S.A.R.C.A.S.M. take you for a bike tour and be a part of art!

S.A.R.C.A.S.M. is contributing a series of community bike tours to the development and research stage of the Gallery Lambton project, Sensing Place. These tours generate a Sense of Place by investigating and exposing people and places of historical significance in our community. This tour is expected to last between 30-60 minutes and cover between 10-20 significant sites. Learn about your community, be a part of this great project, and have a healthy First Friday bike ride!

Throughout 2011, visiting artist Andreas Rutkauskas (Montreal) and cultural writer Lee Rodney (Windsor) will work closely with Director/Curator Lisa Daniels and the Sarnia Artist-Run Collective for Arts Science and Music (S.A.R.C.A.S.M.) in the design and production of a new artistic project to engage the Sarnia-Lambton community with our local landscape. Using GPS technology, Rutkauskas will lead a cutting-edge project, but he needs your help!

This project is generously supported by Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Canadian Heritage, Lambton County and Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec.

Volunteer Appreciation Bus Trip

On Saturday, August 13, Gallery Lambton held a volunteer appreciation bus trip to Toronto. Altogether, over 40 people boarded the bus early Saturday morning. Our first stop was to support Sarnia artist Ian McLean by going to see his exhibition, Recreational Use, at the Loop Gallery. McLean had a beautiful selection of new paintings in the exhibition and continues to demonstrate a consistent growth in his practice.

After that, the group enjoyed guided tours of the Abstract Expressionist New York exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario, on loan from the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It is a wonderful exhibition, and along with the General Idea exhibition that is also currently on display, there is no reason to not plan an art trip of your own to Toronto sometime soon.

Keep your eyes peeled as there will be many exciting and enriching volunteer opportunities at the Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery!

Programming

Today, an art gallery serves as more than a place for the ongoing care of a significant art collection and the presentation of exhibitions, it is also a social forum where dialogue, debate, innovation and the building of community can occur. Art plays an essential role in building and sustaining a diverse community that is socially and economically healthy.

Plans are underway for an exciting exhibition program that includes bringing exhibitions and art works to the New Art Gallery of Lambton from other major galleries from across the country, something we have not been able to do in our current location.

We are working on collaborative projects with other galleries including  a collaborative regional historical artist project with a group of Cananadian Historical Art Practitioners (CHAPS). CHAPS is made up of historical Curators from across southern Ontario including: Carlton University Art Gallery; the Robert McLaughlin Gallery; the AGO; Museum London; The Ottawa Art Gallery; Agnes Etherington Art Gallery; The McMichael Canadian Art Collection; Hamilton Art Gallery; and the Varley Gallery.

Lisa Daniels, Gallery Lambton Curator, meets with CHAPS and Doris Couture-Rigert, Senior Conservator at the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) to discuss the new Art Gallery of Lambton and the requirements of the NGC 'On Tour' program as well as with curators & installation officers at the Ottawa Art Gallery.

A lot goes on behind the scenes at a gallery like the new Art Gallery of Lambton. Meeting category A standards will require more than maintaining stringent environmental standards. It also means we need to ensure we have the required policies and protocols in place from security systems to  how we photograph the art work.

Shelly Mallon, Collections Assistant, visited the Canadian Conservation Institute in Ottawa to gather information on the required level of standards needed to receive Category A standards.

 Enhanced programming:

Gallery Lambton is very excited about the enhanced programming that is in the works.

RAAW program

We are working on developing many of our existing programs, including the Random Acts of Art Workshops (RAAW Studios) for youth. RAAW is a free art program for 14 - 18 year olds. Over the past two years, this program has been evolving to the point where many of the sessions are oversubscribed. Gallery Lambton is working with participants to engage responsibly with their  community through art!

RAAW IS COMING!  (and it's FREE!)

Adjunct Aboriginal Curator Residency:

An opportunity for a Sarnia native (who is a practicing artist and curator at the national level) to work with us on developing a curatorial program that reflects the wealth of contemporary Aboriginal art practices in Canada and the contemporary Aboriginal voice in Lambton County is in the works.

Curatorial Internships & Artist Residencies:

Lambton County has no post secondary opportunities for residents who want to pursue a career in the visual arts. Aiming to help fill that gap, we are developing a program that will bring emerging and professional practicing artists into the community for extended periods to work with local artists and the community. Additionally, we are working with universities that offer curatorial programs to bring young curators into the community to conduct research on our permanent collection.

There are many exciting programs and exhibition projects in the works that will be communicated here as they develop. Programs include Art & Ideas, Art Film screenings, lecture series, mini talks and tours, One Night Stands, docent and other volunteer programs etc.
